IBM Power Systems (formerly AS/400) Technology

Originally introduced as IBM AS/400 in 1988 to replace the IBM System/38, the platform underwent multiple upgrades and replacements until it was finally replaced by the IBM Power System Series in April 2008. The newer range supported various operating systems such as AIX & Linux along with the default i5/OS, also called the OS/400.

The predecessor to the IBM Power Systems platform was the System i Platform. It extended the default (system/38) architecture of an object-based system with an integrated DB2 relational database. The concept of a virtual machine together with single level storage further established the platform as an advanced enterprise machine. Although the System i included an extensive operating system - the i5/OS, it is also known to be capable of supporting multiple instances of AIX, Linux, Lotus Domino, and Windows Server
