Open Source refers to technology (applications, software, etc.) made available free of charge to the general public. Open source operates under the rationale that a large community of developers working together without proprietary motives can produce a more useful & bug-free product.
Since they are free (and yet of very high quality,) open-source technologies make sense business-wise, too. The shared development of a worldwide community contributes to the stability as well as features that constantly, evolve to cater to the large community of users deploying such technology.
One of the most impressive examples of open source technology, undoubtedly, is LAMP - an acronym for Linux, MySQL, Apache and (popularly) PHP. The combination usually varies - especially with web scripting software. While PHP is the most popular choice, it may be replaced by Perl or Python, depending on the choices adopted. Although, the individual programs were not designed with interoperability in mind, the core development philosophies and tool-sets were shared & developed (almost) together.
