With web 2.0, many of the older technologies went through an extensive overhaul. From static one-way window-pane displays, websites have now become two-way conversations. Newer languages such as PHP, Ruby, ColdFusion, Perl, Python, JSP and ASP dynamically collect information from files and databases, process the data and output it in machine-readable formats such as XML, RSS and JSON.
Similarly, the client side (i.e. your web browser) uses newer technologies such as AJAX a.k.a Asynchronous JavaScript & XML, Adobe Flash and the Adobe Flex framework, and various UI frameworks to interact with the page dynamically. For instance, using JavaScript in AJAX programming, ONLY the requisite data is acquired (in machine-readable XML format) from the server WITHOUT the need for a full page reload.
A case in example is the solution we developed for one of our clients who is an Education Software provider. The objective was two-fold - to migrate from a client-server platform to the web platform and adding new features to enhance the product. Using AJAX coded on ASP.NET interacting with an SQL server, Core ECS was able to deliver the solution within an extremely short timeframe and achieved huge success - the user base increased to 700 within 6 months of release.
The latest HTML5 standards introduce a number of new elements, some of which are semantic replacements to commonly used objects on modern websites. One of the biggest anticipated features of the latest HTML5 standard is the inclusion of features like video playback and drag-and-drop that were formerly dependent on plug-ins. Combine CSS3 and HTML5 and we see the web headed towards becoming an exciting, interactive platform.
